Headhunters mark Connor Morris' anniversary in show of force after police bust

The man who killed gang member Connor Morris with a sickle during a street brawl has failed to have his murder conviction thrown out. Michael Murray, 36, was in August 2015 found guilty of murder for striking 26-year-old Mr Morris once on the head using the long-handled blade during a fight in west Auckland's Massey the previous year. Appealing the conviction, Murray's lawyers in July told the Court of Appeal there was real risk the case was prejudiced by intense media coverage and sympathy for Mr Morris' partner, the late broadcaster Sir Paul Holmes' stepdaughter, Millie Elder-Holmes. The death was covered in more than 270 articles before the trial even began, the court heard. Murray's lawyers also claimed there was a danger the jury would be intimated by the presence of Mr Morris' Head Hunters associates in the courtroom. During the trial it was publicly known Mr Morris was the son of senior Head Hunters member Chris Morris. But the Court of Appeal this week rejected Murray's appeal, saying it was "abundantly apparent" the court was aware of the dangers of prejudice and had instructed the jury properly about it. "We do not consider the effect of those aspects of the media coverage on potential members of the jury was necessarily prejudicial to Mr Murray," Justice Denis Clifford said in the court's decision. "[Connor] Morris was not painted as a sympathetic character: he was, after all, a member of the Head Hunters," Justice Clifford said. "Pre-trial media coverage, as well as evidence at trial, showed him to be a man with a violent past, who had earlier been involved in drug dealing." During the trial, Murray's lawyers said he was trying to defend his brother, who was on the ground being beaten by a much larger and stronger Mr Morris after a fight broke out between their friends. "I stepped forward ... I closed my eyes and swung," Murray told the court. Ms Elder-Holmes took the stand herself in an emotional testimony that drew significant media attention. She described screaming hysterically as she tried to hold back the blood gushing from her partner's head. Murray was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 10 years. Defence lawyer Marie Dyhrberg, QC, said Murray's time in prison would be dangerous due to threats from Mr Morris' associates and that it would largely be spent in isolation. A shout of "Murray, your day is coming" echoed from the public gallery as the verdict was read. In the 1960s, a gang of variously disaffected youth sprang up in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. They didn't ride bikes, but they quickly developed all the trimmings of an outlaw motorcycle club: patches, club colors, and a fiercely violent process of initiation. They came to be known as the Mighty Mongrel Mob and today they're the largest gang in the country, with around 30 chapters across both islands. Media access to the Mob is rare, which is why this photo series by Jono Rotman is kind of a big deal. Jono, who is a Wellington born photographer now living in NYC, cut his teeth capturing New Zealand's prisons and psychiatric wards, before he took on gang life in 2007. We asked him how he convinced hardened gang members to sit for large format photography, and what he learned along the way.

A few weeks ago on the 17th May 2017, the Vaha’akolo, Rewiti and Dalton whanau farewelled a much loved son, brother, partner and father to two beautiful girls. Not only did they lose a loved family member, but the Otara/ South Auckland/ Aotearoa Hip Hop scene also lost a hugely influential artist who, love it or hate it, unapologetically spoke on behalf of his neighbourhood with artistic integrity, a storyteller sharing his true life stories about the environments that surrounded him. With the permission of his whanau, this is a short video of Paul Dalton aka Facekilla’s final day for those who were unable to attend, from family and friends to those whose lives he touched inside the correctional facilities. We were limited in terms of no camera's in the marae, no tripod and sporadic wet weather on the day, but we do know that many out there will appreciate any insight into his final sendoff. The streets will continue to echo your name and your music. Rest in peace Facekilla.

The Maori people of New Zealand came from eastern Polynesia in waves of canoes sometime between 1250 and 1300 AD. Over the centuries, they developed a rich and complex society that included a fierce and terrifying warrior culture. Europeans described the Maori warriors as large men, although women could be warriors as well, who had extensive facial tattoos. While they looked fearsome, their intense physical appearance is only the start of what made these warriors so terrifying. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 → → GET A T-SHIRT - http://www.toptenz.net/toptenz-t-shirts →Top 10 Objects That Were Clearly Invented Just to Annoy Physics: https://youtu.be/0MVGeRa-vLo Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet!
